The history of Holy
Trinity Church, Coldhurst
The first references to ‘Couldhyrst’
as a name of the district appears in records dating from 1523.
From the fifteenth
century onwards, newly-allotted district names were mainly descriptive and
purely Anglican in origin, and ‘Couldhyrst’
is no exception. The name is made up of two words, namely ‘Hyrst’, later becoming ‘Hurst’ variously
meaning wooded slope, grove, thicket or hill. The meaning of
‘Could’ (later becoming ‘Cold’) is all too obvious to
any inhabitants of the district.
